Description Crystal Glass with Ormolu Mounts From our Glassware collection, we are delighted to offer this Crystal Glass and Ormolu Wine Decanter. The Decanter beautifully made with an alternating quilt cut glass body with an acid etched border depicting grape vines. The Decanter is mounted upon a flared ormolu base and ormolu mounted rim finished with a crystal glass lid with ormolu ring. The front of the Decanter is fitted with an ormolu tap or faucet for easy dispensing of the contents and the lid is fully removable for easy access to refill with your favourite tipple. The Crystal Glass and Ormolu Decanter dates to the early Art Deco period and the first half of the 20th century circa 1920. Ormolu is the technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold–mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold coating. The French refer to this technique as bronze doré and in English it is often referred to as gilt bronze. It is a finishing technique which adds an overall gold look to any object without the massive cost and impracticality of making an object out of solid gold. Mercury was outlawed in the 1830’s in France however it was still used until the early 1900s. Crystal Glass is a transparent material made from glass with added lead oxide or other metal oxides. The added ingredients make crystal glass heavier, more durable, and easier to work with than regular glass. Crystal glass is known for its brilliance and sparkle, and is often used for decorative items.
