Sevres Bleu Celeste Enamel Box

$56.27 $104.1
Description Good Sized Enamel Box From our collectables category, we’re pleased to offer this Sevres-style Bleu Celeste enamel box dating to the third quarter of the 19th century. The box is decorated in the distinctive bleu celeste ground associated with Sevres porcelain, richly adorned with raised gilt scrollwork and netting. The lid features a finely painted central enamel panel depicting a courting couple seated in a woodland clearing, the male figure shown playing a lute to his companion. The scene is framed by elaborate gilt borders in the Rococo taste. Encircling the body of the box are four smaller painted cartouches, each depicting romanticised European landscapes and buildings, set against a backdrop of further decorative gilt scrolls. A shaped thumb tab is fitted to the front for opening, and the interior is finished in sleek white enamel. This enamel box is characteristic of the Sevres revival styles popular in France during the mid-to-late 19th century, and dates to circa 1870. The use of bleu celeste, narrative figural scenes, and architectural vignettes all reflect the decorative vocabulary of 18th-century Sevres, adapted here in enamel form for the 19th-century decorative market. A well-executed and highly decorative example of Sevres-style enamel work from the later 19th century. SEVRES (MANUFACTURE NATIONALE DE SÈVRES) Sèvres porcelain, founded in 1740 as the Vincennes manufactory and relocated to Sèvres in 1756, became France’s royal porcelain factory under Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour. Renowned for its innovation, rich colours, and refined decoration, Sèvres produced both soft- and hard-paste porcelain, supplying Europe’s elite and serving as a key diplomatic gift of the French crown. Today, Sèvres remains one of Europe’s most celebrated porcelain names. For further information on Sevres see our makers and retailers page on Sevres (Manufacture National De Sevres). ENAMEL (VITREOUS ENAMEL) also known as porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. The word vitreous comes from the Latin vitreous, meaning “glassy”.
