Chinese Silver Tankard with Dragon Handle and Battle Scene, c.1900

$64.96 $119.53
Description Turn of the 20th-century Chinese silver tankard depicting warriors in relief with a dragon handle. From our Chinese collection, we are pleased to offer this Chinese Silver Tankard dating to around 1900. The tankard is of traditional cylindrical form, mounted with an elaborate dragon handle that curves around the side while gripping the vessel with its claws. The surface is finely worked in relief, illustrating a dramatic battle scene with mounted warriors, foot soldiers, shields, and spears set against a landscape of trees, birds, and mountainous terrain. A central figure, likely a leader, appears seated between flag bearers. The detail extends throughout the body, capturing the energy of combat and the richness of Chinese decorative silver from the late Qing period. To the side, a vacant circular cartouche remains untouched ready for initials, and the base carries a partially visible hallmark “EO,” likely attributable to the Chinese silversmith LEO. The tankard is a striking example of Chinese export silver, combining martial themes with cultural inspirations, and dates to the turn of the 20th century. Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) The Qing dynasty, China’s last imperial dynasty, was a period of immense cultural, artistic, and political significance. Spanning nearly three centuries, it was marked by the reign of nine emperors, from the Shunzhi Emperor to the last ruler, Puyi. Known for its flourishing porcelain production, refined decorative arts, and distinctive imperial reign marks, the Qing era shaped much of what is recognised today as classical Chinese art. Each emperor left behind a unique artistic legacy, influencing styles, techniques, and motifs highly prized by collectors. Qing dynasty works, from blue and white porcelain to intricately carved jade and silver continues to be sought after worldwide for their beauty, cultural story, and historical importance.
