Japanese Bronze Okimono of Snow Monkeys by Shosai

$104.83
Description Japanese bronze okimono of seven snow monkeys, signed by Shosai and dating to the Meiji period, circa 1885. The composition shows a male Japanese macaque surrounded by six young monkeys, energetically clambering over one another while playing with persimmon fruit. Each figure is individually cast with close attention to form, posture, and interaction, giving the group a strong sense of movement and connection. The bronze features a warm brown patination with subtle surface variation to bring out the texture of the fur and faces. Known for their social behaviour and visual expressiveness, Japanese macaques (or snow monkeys) were a popular subject among Meiji period animalier sculptors. The underside bears the signature 正齊鋳 (Shosai-chu) within a rectangular reserve. This is a finely observed example of Meiji export metalwork, reflecting the technical confidence and naturalistic style that define Japanese bronze production of the late 19th century. Known as Nihonzaru (Japanese monkey), the Japanese macaque or snow monkey is native to Japan and is the northernmost-living non-human primate. Recognised for its thick fur and pink-red face, the species features widely in Japanese folklore, Shinto belief, and Meiji period art. From bronze okimono to netsuke, snow monkeys were a popular subject for artists such as Mori Sosen and Kawanabe Kyosai, and remain an enduring motif in Japanese sculpture and decorative arts. What is the Japanese MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912)? The Meiji era marked Japan’s transformation into a modern nation and a golden age of decorative arts. With the end of samurai rule and Japan’s opening to the West, artisans produced works of exceptional quality for both domestic and international audiences. Supported by the government through world fairs and Imperial commissions, Japanese lacquerware, cloisonné, satsuma ceramics, bronzes, and ivory carvings reached collectors worldwide. Many leading artists of the time, including Makuzu Kozan and Namikawa Yasuyuki, were honoured as Imperial Household Artists, ensuring the Meiji period remains one of the most celebrated eras of Japanese art. Bronze is an alloy primarily composed of copper with around 12% tin, often combined with other elements such as aluminium, zinc, or phosphorus to enhance strength and durability. Its unique composition allows it to capture fine surface detail, making it one of the most widely used materials in sculpture and design for millennia. First developed as early as 4650 BCE, with early examples found in Iran and Serbia, bronze was prized across ancient civilisations for both functional and decorative use. In the 19th century, cold-painted bronze became popular in Vienna, where artists like Franz Xaver Bergmann added rich colour layers without firing. The patina, texture, and craftsmanship of antique bronze ensure its ongoing appeal to collectors today.
