KPM Porcelain Plaque La Gondole d’Amour After Ignace Spiridon

$62.88 $124.5
Description A finely painted KPM porcelain plaque titled La Gondole d’Amour, dating to the late 19th century. The rectangular porcelain panel depicts a romantic gondola scene after the original painting by the Italian artist Ignace Spiridon (1848-1930). At the helm, a winged cherub steers a gondola carrying two lovers across a still river, accompanied by a pair of swans in the background. The work is notable for its soft pastel tones, classical drapery, and idealised figures, consistent with the late Romantic academic style. The porcelain is housed in its original beaded gilt wood frame with a coral mount. The back of the plaque is open to display the impressed KPM sceptre mark and incised numerals, confirming its Berlin manufacture and reference. This is a high-quality KPM Berlin plaque from the second half of the 19th century, produced for the European collector’s market. View the full European Ceramics collection. Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur – The Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin was founded in 1763 Frederick the Great (King Frederick II). Its actual origins, however, lie in three private enterprises which, under crown patronage, were trying to establish the production of “white gold” (porcelain) in Berlin from the mid-18th century onwards. The company logo is a sceptre, which is stamped (painted prior to 1837) or incised on every piece. All painted pieces produced by KPM are also signed by the painter. KPM is still producing porcelain today. For further information see our Makers and Retailers page on KPM Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur. What is Porcelain? Porcelain is a high fired ceramic made primarily from kaolin clay combined with feldspar and quartz. When fired at temperatures typically above 1,200 degrees Celsius, the body vitrifies, producing a hard, dense and usually white material that can appear slightly translucent when thinly potted. Porcelain was first developed in China during the Tang and Song dynasties, reaching technical maturity by the Yuan and Ming periods. Its strength and smooth surface made it ideal for both functional wares and finely painted decoration. European attempts to replicate true hard paste porcelain led to the foundation of manufactories such as Meissen in the early 18th century, followed by Sèvres and KPM. WHY BUY FROM JACKSONS ANTIQUE?
