Chinese Silver and Enamel Teapot with Magpies and Blossom

$37.85 $48.07
Description This Chinese silver and enamel teapot is a mid-20th century piece from the final years of the Republic period, dating to around 1945. Combining traditional metalwork with vivid enamel painting, it represents the kind of skilled, decorative silver work produced during a time of great transition in Chinese history. The teapot is crafted in a classic rounded form, set on a solid silver base, and joined by a silver filigree-linked chain across the entire body. The surface is decorated with detailed enamel work in a rich palette of pinks, greens, and blues. Branches of blossoming cherry extend across the body, home to several magpies shown mid-flight and perched among the flowers. In Chinese decorative culture, the magpie is a bringer of good news and joy, especially in spring. Each element of the teapot is further embellished: the handle, spout, top rim, and lid all carry ruyi sceptre borders in blue enamel, complemented by a patterned band around the finial. Inside, the teapot is fully silver-gilt and fitted with an integrated strainer at the spout opening, a practical feature for tea service. Traces of the original gilding remain on the outer body, and the base is stamped SILVER in English. The piece dates to the end of the Republic of China era (1912-1949), a time when domestic silver work was evolving alongside global influence and internal change. Teapots of this kind were often privately commissioned, with fine enamelwork applied by hand in specialist workshops. A visually striking and highly decorative piece, this Chinese silver and enamel teapot is a strong collector’s item for those interested in Republican silver, enamelled metalwork, or Chinese decorative arts of the early 20th century. Lear About the Republic of China (ROC) is the official name of Taiwan, an island country in East Asia. The ROC was established in 1912 after the Xinhai Revolution overthrew the Qing dynasty and ended China’s imperial rule. The ROC has been governed independently from mainland China, officially known as the People’s Republic of China (PRC), since 1949. WHAT IS Silver Gilt? Silver gilt is solid silver which has been covered with an exterior coating of gold. WHAT IS Filigree? Filigree is a delicate ornamental detail woven with strips of silver, gold, or other metals, often to create a pattern or decoration. What is Enamel? also known as porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. The word vitreous comes from the Latin vitreus, meaning “glassy”.
