The business was expanded by his son Alfred and later by his grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques, who established branches in Paris, London and New York, creating an international firm. Cartier became known for supplying jewellery to European royal courts, including King Edward VII who granted the firm a Royal Warrant in 1904. The company produced notable designs such as the Santos wristwatch in 1904 and the Tank watch in 1919, along with mystery clocks and platinum jewellery during the early twentieth century. Cartier remained family owned until 1964, after which the Paris, London and New York branches were reunited under single ownership. Amboyna also known as Andaman Padauk, Maiou or Narra grows in parts of East Asia (Malaysia, the Philippines and Borneo) and is often golden brown to red brown in colour with red grain. It is a firm wood with wavy and often interlocking grain making it difficult to work with hand tools, despite this it turns well and produces a high polish. The Burr from these trees varies in colour from a golden yellow to a deep red with sharp, close burr pips. It is very sought after and used for only the finest furniture. For further information see our Woods Encyclopaedia on Amboyna. Thuya grows in North West Africa. It is a soft wood which grows in a sporadic, twisted manner. The sought after part is the burr which grows underground as a root burr. It is red-brown in colour with a fine detailed grain and will take a high polish finish. For further information see our Woods Encyclopaedia on Thuya. Why Buy from Mark Goodger Antiques?
