Description From our cigarette case collection, we are pleased to offer this wonderful Art Deco silver cigarette case decorated with enamel and silver travel pins circa 1925. Made in Warsaw, Poland, the case is formed in solid silver with a classic rectangular shape and engraved exterior. The surface is finished with alternating striped panels, framed by a Greek key border. What makes this piece particularly distinctive is the addition of eighteen travel pins, individually affixed by its original owner. These pins reflect a lifetime of travel and include enamelled emblems such as playing cards, a camel, coats of arms, and stylised monograms. Several pins feature silver marks while others are formed in various metals and finishes. Inside, the case retains its original bands, suitable for holding cigarettes or business cards. It is stamped with the polish hallmarks for 800 silver and Warsaw assay mark. A fascinating object that merges personal history with function, offering continued use and character in equal measure. ABOUT Polish Silver Hallmarks Polish silver is seen in .800, .875 and .940 fineness (out of 1000). The independent existence of Polish territories ended in late 18th century after a series of invasions and partitions carried out by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia, and the Austrian Habsburg Monarchy. Austrian hallmarks were used in Lwów, Krakow and other towns. After WWI Poland obtained independence and in 1920 was introduced the new national hallmarking system (as seen on this cigarette case). About the ART DECO PERIOD (1920-1939) The Art Deco period was a groundbreaking era in design that emerged in France after World War I and flourished worldwide through the 1920s and 1930s. Characterised by bold geometric forms, symmetry, rich materials, and streamlined elegance, Art Deco symbolised modernity, luxury, and optimism. The style influenced architecture, interior design, furniture, jewellery, fashion, glass, and sculpture, blending traditional craftsmanship with new materials such as chrome, stainless steel, and exotic woods. From iconic landmarks like the Chrysler Building in New York to decorative objects by artists such as René Lalique, Demétre Chiparus, and Marcel Bouraine, Art Deco captured the spirit of glamour and progress. Today, it remains one of the most celebrated design movements of the 20th century, prized for its timeless sophistication and decorative artistry.
