Made in Brienz from linden wood, the chair features two upright bears carved in the round, each supporting the seat with raised paws and humorous facial expressions, their tongues protruding and eyes inset with glass. The carving is typical of high-quality Brienz production from the late 19th century, with dense fur texturing and naturalistic posture. Decorative floral sprays are carved into the backrest, framed within a linear border and repeated across the seat base. The chair contains a concealed music box mechanism, hidden beneath the seat and activated by weight. Black Forest children’s chairs are rare, particularly those with dual bear supports and functional musical components. This example combines decorative quality with playful construction, and survives in excellent condition.
