Description This walrus decanter dates to the early twentieth century during the Art Nouveau period, circa 1900. The decanter is modelled in the form of a walrus, the body formed from moulded clear glass with naturalistic shaping to the torso, flippers and tail. The head is finished in silver plate with applied glass eyes and fitted with carved bone tusks which give the piece its distinctive character. The silver plated head lifts to reveal the pouring aperture and is opened using a small thumb tab positioned to the rear of the head, allowing the hinged top to raise cleanly. Beneath the head sits the internal glass stopper which seals the neck of the decanter. The combination of clear moulded glass with sculptural silver plated mounts reflects the playful animal form barware produced during the early twentieth century, when novelty decanters became popular decorative objects for the drinks cabinet.
